Sky bright with the colors of orange sherbet and lime-yellow, the sun beamed down, casting rays filled with dust particles through the large openings of two old cellar doors.

Happy to see natural light, Ertifferrah examined the wooden steps before her, wondering if they would sturdy enough to hold her weight. Not wanting to let go of her newfound gift-the talking book, she pressed it close to her chest and pivoted one foot onto the first step. It creaked loudly as if the step was angry with her for disturbing its slumber.

Closing her eyes hard, she swallowed and cautiously brought her second foot upon the first step. Smiling weakly, she clutched the book even tighter. Step two, clear. Step three, clear. So far so good. Gaining confidence, she increased her upward motion to civilization, ready to breathe in fresh air until halfway up the steps, the ones behind her began crumbling, causing large clouds of powdered wood to fly everywhere creating a mini sand storm.

Alarmed by the sudden disaster in progress, shrilly cat-like screams escaped from her mouth as she rushed up the steps, skipping two and three at a time, while praying with every step that the cellar doors ahead would be able to open with ease for the stairs behind her were still crumbling into powdered nothingness.

Preparing her body to absorb the impact from the fore of her ramming through the doors, she coiled her body inwardly and burst through!

Coughing and squalling after a gust of wind blew by kicking some of the dust into her eyes, she dropped the brown book from what was once a tight clutch and frantically fanned her eyes. Trying to blow into her own eyes, the sting from the dust dug deeper into the folds of her eyes with every blink.

There was a tall statue nearby to which she sprang towards because from the stone statue a stream of water flowed. Leaving the book on the brown book on the ground, half in the sand and half in the rich, green grass, Ertifferrah dove into the water fountain, totally submerging every inch of her body into the chilled crystal water.

Several minutes had gone by before she was able to regain complete function of her eyes. Looking around, soaking wet, a breath of relief slipped through her lips. Thankful that no one was nearby to see her and the mess she had made in the water. All the dust that once covered her now meshed around in the water, turning it into an unpleasant smokey-gray and muddy color.

Bursts of spirited laughter rose from her stomach as she watched the water fountain pump out dirty water from the vase the statue of Lady Governess held. The statue was an anniversary gift from her husband. He presented it to her before a generous crowd of close friends and family. He said that the fountain captured the true beauty and essence of his wife.

-From the rounded edges of her crown that folded and overlapped; touching the sides of her temples, caressing the curls of long, flowing bangs that lightly wrapped around her regally proportioned head.

The person who carved this statue gave the feel of her hair a flowing touch as if there was a real breeze that pushed Lady Governess locks as strong as a three-fold cord into a forward motion. Hair lightly tipping across her face, showcasing the fine arch of the eyebrows that thinned out into a point, giving accent to her feline eyes. Lashes long and curled upward; naturally projecting a semi pout look of innocence.

With cheekbones motioning towards the sun and a refined jawline that framed and complimented her luscious lips that spoke truthfully and justly.

Her rippled gown cascaded her body leaving her slender arms bare. She held the large vase as water poured from it onto large plant leaves allowing the water to stream down into the round pool where Lady Governess bare feet stood. One foot rested lightly on a midsized stone making her toes playfully curl a little and her other foot stood firmly into the water.

Ertifferrah didn’t recall attending that anniversary celebration and from the looks of the statue, she could tell that it was a bit older than she.

Her gown a total mess, she wondered how to explain it all to her mother had they crossed paths. In that case, taking a long way home would be the best choice, and then maybe the gown would be dry by then.

Gathering the droopy garment above her knees she tried to ring out the water. As it dripped on the dry concrete she remembered about the brown book and rushed back to where the cellar doors once stood.

With the book in hand, she looked around, wondering why she hadn’t seen this part of Lady Governess quarts before. The whole area was so unfamiliar and it made her feel a bit uncomfortable. Everything was quiet, and maybe even a little too quiet.

**

Finally arriving home, Ertifferrah was drained emotionally more so than physically. Into the bedroom, she sluggishly walked, too tired to change into a nightgown. Pulling the covers back, she plopped onto the soft bed and opened the vial that Lady Governess had given her earlier that day. As she twisted it open, it made a slight hissing sound.

Cautions not to take more than the Governess had recommended, she poured the elixir into the cap. To be safe, in fact, she poured a little less. “If this works, then maybe I’ll fill the cap all the way tomorrow. Well, here goes nothing.” Her head gently fell into the garden of pillows carefully arranged on the bed. Sweet dreams, Ertifferrah.
