Tarsus High, Accelerated Government:
While Mrs. Amplitude handed out weekend lessons to the class, Octavious glanced over at Erica. Ever since the first day they met in this class, his life had totally changed. Life tackles you almost on a daily basis, so it’s rare when life allows you a glorious touchdown. In finding Erica, though, Octavious had won the game.
Things were different now, and Octavious didn’t want to be with anyone else but her. Thinking of all the things they had gone through together, feeling compelled to be more than her friend; he made it his official business to put into works a master plan to make Erica his own.
Being that the senior prom was around the corner, he didn’t want anyone else beating him to the punch and asking Erica out; although he knew that she would turn all the other guys down, he just had to ask, because he wanted to hear ‘yes’ from her lips. Octavious had to make it official to the student body that he and Erica had paired up for the prom and, hopefully, for good.
Not knowing Octavious felt the same way as she did, Erica couldn’t fight the urge of waiting for a private chance to talk to him, so, instead of working on her assignment, she opened the bear notebook and began writing how she felt. It was the only way to soothe her nerves at that moment. Then, whenever Mrs. Amplitude left, she could hand him the letter. Yeah, that will work, she thought.
Not really knowing where to start, she decided to introduce herself to him as she truly was.
Dear Octavious:
I’m scared, and I think I love you.
What will you think of me now, having read what I wrote?
You are like a god (with a little ‘g’, that is)
Ugg, this wasn’t supposed to be a poem, and I wasn’t even supposed to start it out this way. Let me first start off by introducing myself. My real name is Ertifferrah and, as you know, I am from the glorious land of Akasha—like yourself. Lately, things have been different for me, and I am unsure I can handle it all right now. Sometimes, I just wish things would go back to the way they were. But this would be impossible because this is Destiny and turning back isn’t an option. I know that there is something out there bigger than what we’ve been taught, and the thought scares me. But this one thing is for sure, I need you. For I haven’t run across anyone else, in my entire life, who has made me feel the way you have and to think, we’ve never even been physical, if you know what I mean. Ugh, I can’t believe I just wrote that! But I choose not to erase it because since having met you, I’m kinda slowly but surely learning that you only live once. I better go, here comes the teach.
p.s. I hope you don’t think less of me because of what I wrote. There is so much I wish to share with you, but I know we will have time to do it.
With Love,
Ertifferrah Nubiti Djoser
Folding a crease in the notebook and closing it, she smiled, wondering if he’d write back; that is if she actually gave the note to him.
Unaware that Octavious had gotten up from his seat again in an attempt to peek at what she was writing, he only grasped an ounce of her writing—the part about her not being able to handle things and wishing that things went back to the way they were.
Thinking the worst, Octavious slipped out the door and into the empty halls of Tarsus High filled with grief as his heart burned down into the bottom of his stomach. He walked slowly in a daze. He thought that upon finding Erica, things would be different and that they would go through their trying times together. He hadn’t expected her to be the type of girl who would quit—yet another quality he liked about her was how she didn’t quit—a quality only someone of nobility could possess.
Head lost in a swarm of misty clouds, Octavious pondered over an idea he had that would guarantee him his beauty, if only for a moment. Thinking out loud, he said to himself “Erica, girl, I sure hate that it had to come to this, but it’s the only way, the only thing I got left to keep you mine…”
He waited for Erica to come out of class unable to resist asking what she had written.
“I, uh, saw you scribbling something down in that she-bear notebook of yours and was wondering what you put down”
“What makes you wonder this time?”
“The way you were blushing had me a little bit curious, that’s all,” he continued as he gave a what’s-up look to a couple fellas down the hall. He continued, “Made me wonder if you were scribbling something in that notebook about me…”
Erica laughed nervously, trying to steer the conversation in another direction, and she began to jabber on about something rotting in a locker of a girl that got expelled but he didn’t take the bait, even though the locker they passed did have an awful smell smoldering from within it. Why no one had come to take care of it yet remained a mystery.
“I know you heard me,” he said sternly, smiling just enough to reveal a nice set of teeth, which she had never really noticed before. They looked kind of sharp too, especially the canines.
“Listen, baby girl. I think we need to talk.”
“Uh, um, you’re kind of hurting my arm…” Erica said, not really knowing how to respond to his aggressiveness.
“Sorry.”
Quickly, he guided her into the school library and scanned out the place to see if they had sufficient privacy. They did. Not even the Librarian was in sight, but at this hour, students weren’t expected to be in there anyway. The place was just large enough that they could duck away in a corner without being seen.
Inquiring about the she-bear notebook once again as a final attempt to let her peacefully fork it over, he asked in a pleasant tone as they stood in the stacks of the science fiction section. “Listen, Erica, I know I may seem maybe a little bit pushy right at the moment, but it’s just that I, uh, read some of the stuff you were writing in Government class and—
Somewhat appalled, Erica opened her mouth in surprise, and her beautiful skin turned from sandy to a rusty rose red. This wasn’t turning out the way she had, planned and she didn’t want to hand him the letter until right before his last class of the day so that she wouldn’t be around when he read it.
Realizing that she wasn’t going to hand the notebook over any time soon, Octavious pulled her close to him, holding her tight as a vise, holding her head back slightly. He waited for her neck to throb and then bit down into her neck as gently as he possibly could. He squeezed her tighter now, and seconds after, Erica found herself becoming lightheaded as if her feet were starting to float. She suddenly forgot where they were, and everything around her became filled with the bright colors of whites and golds.
Octavious knew he had her, seeing that her eyes were glazed over. She held her head as if she had a headache and then looked into his eyes in confusion.
He checked his watch then walked behind her as she passed out into his arms.
Luckily, whenever he bit someone, the marks healed the moment he removed his fangs.
Glad that all had gone well so far, he didn’t know how he was going to explain to Erica how her pretty brown eyes had changed from that color to deep emerald green with light hazel specks. It was just one of the many perks that the ‘bite-ee’ gets to enjoy for the few hours before it wore off.
Biting females isn’t really one of his fortes, honestly, because Octavious was a true gentleman; but there was an occasion or two when he needed to bite in order to save himself, plain and simple. All he could say on that matter was that he was glad it was over.
Upstairs in a study room, on a purple beanbag chair, Erica slept while Octavious peacefully watched her. Waiting for her to awake, he decided to work on classwork.
The first bell rang, announcing that second lunch was over, and Erica awoke groggily.
As they walked down the busy halls, he grabbed her books in one hand and wrapped his arm around her waist. Maneuvering around now, as he sifted the bear notebook from her pile of books, he placed it into his leather tote with ease.
He had wanted to take the notebook right after placing her on the beanbag chair, but by that time, the librarian was back, and he insisted that they keep the study room door opened. Going through her things wouldn’t have been so hard, but sitting at a table with a girly diary would have raised some hairs as a couple of his guy friends came sprawling in.
Not knowing if he could take the pain of reading what she had written, he chose to read it at home. The worst part was over, the book was in his possession, and Erica wouldn’t even realize the cherished item was gone until later in the day. For a fact, the trance would lift by no later than nightfall which gave him ample time to get it home without her becoming suspicious. He couldn’t see himself finishing out the remainder of the school day, so on that note, he decided to call it a day and made an exit out one of the side doors, preparing for a sort of long walk home.
