Erica was one of the last students to file into the auditorium. She didn’t want to be crammed into a room with so many people – in fact, she didn’t even want to be at school – but not going wasn’t an option.  “Why can’t I just go home?”  She complained aloud, rolling her eyes. Looking around to see if anything interesting was about to happen, like a fight or something to join in for the heck of it. Anything that spelled out disaster, she headed towards.  At least then maybe she could get sent to the office and maybe just maybe, get sent home. “This is ridiculous, how many principals have we gone through?” she asked a girl sitting next to her.


The lights dimmed. Someone from the faculty took to the podium and began. “Ladies and gentlemen of Tarsus High School, I introduce to you your new principal.”


The auditorium fell silent as a refined woman walked out slowly from behind the heavy curtains as if emerging from the shadows. The only sound heard was her heels clicking across the wooden floor as she moved forward with the look of determination etched on her face.  Obviously, she had something to say and wasn’t doing to let anything put a stop to it either.


After a brief, greeting to the student body and facility, she started right into the speech. “I fear for you all. I see you as victims-victims of a poorly prepared educational experience which have in turn resulted in low S.A.T scores. With this, our school has lost money; because the government feels as though we haven’t been doing our part to educate you. -So why continue handing us money? Money is what we need to fuel the means so that your instructors can offer you their best every day in class. I need to see you succeed.


Our school system has been broken down because of this trivial financial constraint and your minds aren’t as strong as they need to be when the time comes for you to go on to college.



As the principal of Tarsus High, it is my solemn duty to equip you for the real world.


And with that, let me conclude by saying that I’m honored to take this position as your new principal and will strive to get our school back into shape because we all know that knowledge is the key to success.”


By the time the house lights turned on, Principal Veedra had already made her exit.

  Assuming that nothing else could go wrong, Octavious headed to his bedroom chambers, ran water for a long, hot, shower, and prepared himself as best as he could for what was to come in Erica’s book.
