“Deities?”

“You're telling me you haven’t heard about them?!”

“No.”

“You have to go to the bathroom?” he asked.

“As a matter of fact, I do.”

“Then you better take care of that now, because this is going to be a long story.

**

“It was in the times of the old kingdom in Akasha, you know, when everything was perfect, like how it's been said.  During this time of rule, there were eight people better know as the ' Deities'. They always traveled together. Four females and four males possessing great powers. The eight realized they were the only ones with the 'gifts' and liked it that way.

“As they grew older, the glitz of it all turned from pleasurable to a nuisance, because people continued asking them for their help with problems, being that the eight were known to be powerful.

“Needing a place of escape, the Deities searched for the perfect spot to use as a daily retreat so that they could relax and share with each other how they felt, being that they all shared the same gifts, in a way; they knew they could safely confide in one another.

“Where did they go?”

“They found a wooded location far away from the city yet somewhat close, a spot that was open but secluded at the same time.  It was a paradise to them, a secret haven, and over time, they all became even closer.  Some said when they were seen together, they didn’t look or act as if they wanted any dealings with anyone outside their group; as if they belonged to a cult, they had an uneasy presence whenever they came back into the city to get together or visit.”

“What were their names?” Erica asked.

“I was getting to that part.  Having said all of that, now, I do remember hearing about magical stuff happening to two people. When two people, a male, and a female, had a connection, or like you know, just vibe with each other spiritually, the two became one, creating for them an earthy element of power, such as the power to control the wind, water, fire, et cetera.  From what I’ve heard, too, it was extremely uncommon for a pair to ever obtain an element for that matter.”

“So, you mean to tell me that all the married couples in the land of Akasha haven’t shared that true connection?” Erica looked puzzled.  “Well, that doesn’t make any sense!  Why would male and female agree upon becoming husband and wife if they know from the start that the strong connection isn’t there?“

“Good question, good point,” agreed on Octavious.  “Prime example: my mother and father had it. They possessed the element of fire.”

“Wow!  Are you serious?”

“Dead serious, but over time, their lines of communication started to fizzle because the both of them became so involved with their jobs.  I mean, it wasn’t that noticeable at first, but with my father into politics and my mother an active member of the school board… in most cases, if you’re born with the drive to win, this distance eventually sets in; and after years of hard work, you’re offered a promotion with a lustrous pay raise. Yeah, it may sound good, but in the long run, that goal my parents worked so hard for put a strain on their marriage, and, unfortunately, they lost the connection altogether.

“Getting back to the Deities story, though, what made the eight of them so special was that every single one of them had already possessed the power to control an earthly element since birth!”

“Wooow,” Erica said in amazement.  “They didn’t have to connect with anyone!?  Wow!”

“Yes, and it was also said they also had the power to manipulate time itself.  Rumor has it that they literally mastered the saying ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans’, meaning they knew how to blend and adapt to any environment.  So if you came face to face with a Deity, you’d never know it.

“Wow! Octavious, that’s fascinating!”

But what I’m about to tell you is the icing on the cake. In actuality, the eight of them were little gods.  Strong enough to be revered and respected but not strong enough to ever rule a nation or take a throne and become a True god.  That, they never understood.”

“Wouldn’t you think that they would be celebrated at least?” asked Erica.

Octavious continued “Remember, early in our conversation, when I mentioned how my mom and dad made it to their highest connection to create an element?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, since you know the Deities were each born already possessing an earth element, which is proof enough for everyone to believe that maybe the eight of them were around since the beginning of time, this, in turn, makes them the creators of life itself.  That being a possibility, the people in the land took this notion as a fun fable, but over time, it grew into more of a belief because how else could life have come about?! The Deities became sought after and revered.  It wasn’t long till a law passed to dedicate a national holiday to the Deities called “The Day of the Ogdoad”. ‘Ogdoad’ means ‘eight’.”

“Tell me more!”  Erica said. Eager for more.

“Here, let me grab a pen,” Octavious said. He came back from the kitchen, holding a spiral notebook and a purple Sharpie. Slouching down beside her, he clicked the pen and drew a chart:

See right here, this is the chart that represents both the names of the males and females who were and perhaps still are a part of the Deity.  This chart explains to you basically the powers they owned. The females and males have been paired off, and in the center column, it shows you the element they both were born with.

Over the years, the Deities official meeting spot in the woods was transformed from a makeshift table and chairs that had been made out of boulders into superb living quarters.  Underground is where the entire fortress lay, all of it except for the entrance, which was hidden quite well.  Their privacy was important to them and so, underground is where they stayed for years.”

“Obviously, they so really, really wanted to get away from it all!” Erica scoffed.

“Yeah…” He said in a drag.

“As generations came and went, new generations came with this natural state of change, which brought the unfortunate reality before the Deities; they were no longer sought after. The meaning of who they gradually became a celebrated myth rather than revered as it once had been long ago. They became upset that their people had forgotten who they were and blamed previous generations for not retelling their story to their grandchildren.

“Feeling stripped of their importance and compelled not be forgotten, on the night of the celebration of the Ogdoad, the Deities performed a ritual which took place around a fire that blazed high. Eight boulders represented each deity and their earth element, encircling them as they held hands, singing, laughing, and sharing intimate stories about themselves.  Round and round they danced, one by one, each Deity shared a new secret out loud with the others.

“Feelings mixed of rage, fear of being forgotten, excitement, and glee about knowing that perhaps they had discovered a way to both get revenge on both the ancestors who hadn’t kept their legacy alive and the generations who currently mocked them.  By the completion of the ritual, the idea of possessing enough power to gain control over the throne of their present ruler was also quite likely.

“But it took a turn for the worse—the winds from every hemisphere blew in, causing sparks to fly, which formed a ring of fire.  Obviously, the ritual was beginning to take effect; the Deities’ excitement grew, as their hearts continued beating as one, souls and thoughts darkening with lust for revenge.  Faster and faster, the eight Deities circled, but now in total silence, their eyes lusting for the ultimate goal.

Although the sun had almost set, to all of their surprises, the sun suddenly stopped, halfway.  As a grey, transparent haze slowly crept from the northward skies, the Deities began levitating off the ground.  An invisible spirit then emerged out of the haze and carefully placed its eerily long feet on the charred ground, one by one…

In a trance-like state, the Deities stood while the long-footed spirit studied the face of each Deity intently.  Its eyes drilling into theirs in search of which earth element belonged to whom.

“Satisfied, the spirit nodded its head in agreement with a translucent figure next to it. The long-footed spirit flicked its wrist and voiced a simple command in another language, summoning something to come forth.

Immediately, thunder cracked, causing the Deities to awake from their trance just in time to see a spirit rapidly and VICIOUSLY charging from out of the sun, roaring wildly as if possessed by dozens of other strong-armed spirits surrounding it.

The long-footed spirit extended its hand and silenced the cries of all but one of the Deities.

“Speak, for this shall be your last sentence spoken.”

“What are you?” the youngest one asked.

“I AM GREED.”

And with that, the long-footed spirit motioned for the spirit that had emerged from the sun to do its duty.

“Oh, I almost forgot…” Greed spoke sinisterly.  It snapped its bony fingers and gave the Deities their voices back.

“With their faces filled to the brim with fear, the Deities cried in terror as the beastly spirit materialized into earthly form. Dirt trickled from the ground and formed a frame of what looked like a human being. Next, the long-footed spirit took out a long dagger and viscously sliced into the skin of the eldest Deity. As the dripping blood ran down and puddle into the dirt where the body was forming, it began to mix together, forming a visual of thick, slimy flesh. Its stomach protruded as globs of mucous and flesh began rolling outwards and took form, around a frame of yellow bones.  The final stage of the forming of human was complete. -But this towering being was no ordinary human. He was a Nephilim with a face of a horrendous demon! With sword in hand, he forcefully raised it to the grown, bellowing out a thunderous roar, and savagely trusted the blade into the ground, causing the earth to quake and the ground to split jaggedly all around him. Through the extensive canyon splits in the ground, smoke seeped through and rivers of lava and massive-sized boulders poured out.

The Nephilim’s mammoth jaws opened wide and stretched down to the ground, revealing to them the entrance to hell itself. They all stood petrified and frozen stiff.

The long-footed spirit sprinkled powder over the Deities and deviously muttered a chant that put them into a trance that made them walk without free will onto the tongue of the Nephilim that formed into steps which led to the very pits of hell. As they walked in, the Nephilim engulfed them in its blood-wrenched jaws, and with a look of satisfaction; he chewed and swallowed them all.

“So what was it that you wanted to tell me?” asked Octavious, his eyes trying to meet with hers as she nervously looked across and around the room and flicked on a light.

“Erica?”

“Huh?” She jumped.

Waving his hand in front of her face, “Are you with me, are you here, girl?”

“Oh, yeah, sorry, it’s just that the story…” she paused, thinking and then continued with a nervous laugh, “it kind of scared me. I see you don’t forget anything do you?”

Erica wasn’t too sure if she wanted to share her personal feelings and experiences with him after hearing the story because it made her alarmed and uncertain. If what Octavious had shared with her about the Deities was true, and deep down, she believed it to be, then that meant she and Octavious could possibly obtain an earth element too!

Feeling more convicted and compelled to be straightforward, with a heavy sigh, she proceeded to share with him.

“Octavious, I want you to be the one I share with.”

There was a long pause.

Erica continued “Will you please share my world with me?”

Speechlessness washed over him, and the words had not yet registered.

SLAM!

“Ugg, my mom’s home!  Quick, let’s go, I gotta hide you!”

Both scrambling to clean up the den as quickly as possible, grabbing the pizza boxes, soda cans, and box of ice cream, they rushed off into Erica’s bedroom, laughing quietly.

**

Turning on the kitchen light, she placed her blazer and briefcase on the table.

Walking into the den to turn on the television, she stepped on something.  It was the notebook Octavious had written in.  She picked it up, eyes widening in horror.

Turning on the kitchen light, she placed her blazer and briefcase on the table.  As she sorted through the mail for signs of anything important, the house phone rang.

“Hello,” she said, and then, after a few words, the conversation ended and the phone was set back on the base.

Walking into the den to turn on the television, she stepped on something.  It was the notebook Octavious had written in.  As she bent down to pick it up, now holding it to her face, her eyes widened in horror and her body stiffened with shock.

“Mom?” asked Erica.

“Ooh!”  Startled by her daughter, she jumped. Still gripping the notebook in her hands, she wiped the sweat from her brow and tried to put on a polite smile.

“Erica, hello darling, and how—how was your day at school?”

“Fine.  Are you okay?”

“Sure, fine, yeah.  I’m fine. I think that maybe I worked a little too hard tonight.  I think I’ll take a quick shower and turn in for the night.  Honey, will you be alright with that?”

“Yes, mother.  Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Great! Ah, here, you left your homework on the floor.  What is it you’re studying…Biology?”

Not waiting for a response, her mother went to the medicine cabinet and took out a bottle of aspirin.  Filling a glass with warm water from the tap, she headed into her bedroom.

Erica took two glasses from the dishwasher and headed into her room where Octavious waited.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I think, we left the notebook,”  Erica answered as she plopped it on the bed.

“And?”

“My mother was holding it when I walked in.  She looked like she had seen ten ghosts.”

“For real?!” Octavious said.

“It bothered me too because I never saw her look like that before, that’s all. But she did say she had a long day, which is probably true because she worked a double shift.”

“That explains it then, your mom’s been crunching numbers and reading charts all day, so here at home is the last place she’d want to see stuff like that.  I mean, after football practice, honestly, I can’t even watch football on TV. Not after the way coach runs us.”

“I see your point.”

“Hey, by the way, how about you come to watch me work it tomorrow on the field?”

“Sure, sure, why not, want me to cheer you on or something?”

“Naw, I got something better in mind.  Why don’t you join the cheerleading team so when I practice, you can be out on the field practicing with me?”

The thought made her blush.  Not answering, she took the remote control from his hand and flipped through the channels.
